If the return is accepted you will have to amend your original tax return. An amended return, Form 1040X, can only be printed and mailed to the IRS if the original tax return was not e-filed. The IRS will take up to 16 weeks or longer to process an amended tax return.
Before starting to amend the tax return, wait for the tax refund to be received or the taxes due to be paid and processed by the IRS.
See this TurboTax support FAQ on amending a tax return originally completed and filed using the 2020 TurboTax online editions - https://ttlc.intuit.com/community/amending/help/how-do-i-amend-my-turbotax-online-return/01/27577
The IRS Form 1040-X for amending a 2020 tax return is scheduled to be available on 03/25/2021 (subject to change)
It is FARRRR to soon to amend.......if your first-filed tax return was accepted, you cannot stope the first one, and you must:
1) wait for the original Refund, or pay the original Balance Due
and
2) Wait for the 1040X form to become available...now scheduled for 25 MARCH....

bookmark the Amend instructions, but when you can actually prepare and file them may have to wait several weeks:

FYI, the form 1040-X for filing an amended return is already available from the IRS. The hold-up is with TurboTax, which apparently doesn’t intend to make that functionality available until March 25 (and I’ll believe it when I see it).
Amend in TurboTax will be available in late March.
You generally must file an amended return within three years of the date you filed the original return or within two years after the date you paid the tax, whichever is later.
@anourot
It's saying the IRS is making some changes and upgrading the form. IS there a new date of when it'll be available or Can people do it by mail?
When you're ready to amend, find your situation below and follow the instructions.
Don't worry if your refund meter drops to 0; this is normal. Your calculations will come out correctly in the end.
Finish and file your amendment according to the instructions. You can e-file your 2020 amended federal tax return, but most states require amendments to be printed and filed by mail.
If e-filing, you’ll review and transmit your federal return. If not, we'll give you instructions to print and mail your amended return.
3 weeks after mailing your amended federal return, you can start tracking it at the IRS Where's My Amended Return? site.
Allow at least 16 weeks for the IRS to process your amended return.
Processing times for amended state returns vary from state to state. If it's been more than 12 weeks since you mailed your amended state return, and you haven't heard anything, we suggest you contact your state tax agency
when will this be availbe on turbotax because its not there rightnow
Here is a link to the TurboTax Expected Availability dates for federal forms. You will need to open the link and select the TurboTax version you are using and then follow the link for the expected availability date:
TurboTax Expected Availability federal forms list
TurboTax Expected Availability State forms list
Most, if not all, versions of TurboTax do already contain the 1040X as an available form in te software.
If it is not showing, maybe you have not actually filed the return yet or it was rejected and can just be fixed and retransmitted instead of having to amend it. That would be a lot easier.
There doesn't seem to be a "Amend a filed return" option in the mac version of turbotax premier

Mobile devices use the TurboTax online editions.
That does not work!! I've already received my refund, I got another W2 and a 1099G after I transmitted my return. I didn't report the unemployment on my original tax return because I didn't have the information to enter. I need to file an amendment Asap!!!

See this TurboTax support FAQ if you cannot start an amended tax return - https://ttlc.intuit.com/community/amend-tax-return/help/why-can-t-i-amend-my-return/01/2122917
I also spoke to an IRS agent earlier and read off the message on turbotax saying I'm unable to file an amendment at this time because of the unexpected Tax Credit Break implemented by the new American Relief Plan, and she said, she didn't understand why Turbotax has that message up. I am unable to go past that! I actually started amending my 2020 return, and got booted out, back onto that message.
Exactly and all they keep doing is telling everybody that it’s available and they can go do it but no one can and when I was on the phone with them earlier yesterday they were telling me that we could do it they don’t know why it’s saying that
The agent is uninformed. The IRS does not want amended returns with a 1099-G for unemployment at this time until they issue guidelines how to amend other related items because the IRS is going to adjust already filed returns themselves for the unemployment exclusion and they do not want an amended return doing the same thing.
Since amended returns are currently taking 4-6 months to process, the IRS's internal adjustment will have happened long before the amended return is even processed.
No you are incorrect. The IRS put out guidance stating “There is no need for taxpayers to file an amended return unless the calculations make the taxpayer newly eligible for additional federal credits and deductions not already included on the original tax return.” this was put out several days ago.
people are frustrated eith Turbotax because they promised March 25th but for those like me with unemployment and newly qualified for EIC, I must amend.
My return was submitted and I have already received my refund. I need to amend my return due to late 1099s. Nothing to do with unemployment, which seems to be the holdup. TurboTax said they would have the form available by March 25, which has now come and gone, and still no form. Ridiculous.
