When it says state and it says started, what does that mean, if my federal is pending??

Until the federal is accepted for processing your account is frozen and you can do nothing with the state ... once it is accepted, if you had filed the state with the federal then it will be forwarded automatically to the state .... if you didn't send the state at the same time as the federal return then you will need to return, complete the state interview section and then the FILE tab to submit the state return.

You may not like it but it is a safety precaution designed to keep the user  from making errors that you may not know they did and are difficult to correct. And foul language is never appropriate so please refrain or you will be blocked from this forum.

Your federal return says "pending" because the IRS is not accepting returns until January 29, 2018. The state return says "started" because it can be filed ONLY AFTER the federal return is accepted. After your federal return is accepted, click on this link to complete your State return:

These agents giving answers are stupid and incompetent. YOU DO NOT HAVE TO WAIT TO FILE STATE TAXES! You can file all at the same time and your taxes usually will be accepted within a few days of each other. I filed both on the 13th and my federal was accepted on the 16th and my state taxes accepted 2 days ago.

That was good for you but some states still are not accepting returns ... but filing them at the same time is the right way to do it and the program sends them automatically once the federal is accepted.
