It will be on your state tax return and should show a line on the return that will be labeled with something like Refund or Overpayment on one of the last lines of the return.

Without knowing which state return you filed in 2021 we cannot tell you which line on the state tax return.

Every state has different forms, so we cannot tell you exactly where to find the refund amount on your state tax return without knowing what state it's from.

You will get a Form 1099-G from the state showing the amount of your 2021 state income tax refund. The amount will be in box 2 of the 1099-G. In some cases the amount on the 1099-G might be different from what's on your 2021 state tax return. Enter the amount from the 1099-G in TurboTax for your 2022 federal tax return. The state will send out the 1099-G form by January 31. Some states do not mail out the 1099-G forms. You have to access it on the state's web site. Check your state's tax web site for information on how to get your 1099-G.

On your 2021 federal tax return, did you claim itemized deductions (Schedule A) or did you use the standard deduction? If you used the standard deduction on your 2021 federal tax return, you do not have to enter your 2021 state tax refund in your 2022 federal tax return. It is not taxable, and will not have any effect on your 2022 tax.
