When I look at my refund for last year it says that I got back an amount that I never received and I wanted to know how would I be able to receive that?

Did you receive a tax refund?   If the IRS or state reduced your refund you should have received a letter that explained why the refund was reduced.   TurboTax never knows when the IRS or state reduces your refund.   Lots of people made mistakes with the recovery rebate credit so that is one possible reason why your refund could have been reduced.   Or did you owe child support or back taxes?   Only the IRS or state can tell you why the refund was less than you expected.

I only received my state and IRS refund money and nothing else. I never received a letter from the IRS about reduced funds, and as far as I know I didn’t owe anything back.

What is the difference between the amount of the refund you say you are seeing in your account and the amount you actually received from the IRS?   Did you have an amount on line 30 of your Form 1040?   Did you receive unemployment in 2020?   When did you file the 2020 return?

Where do you see your refund amount? The only refunds you should receive from anything filed with TurboTax are your State and Federal (IRS) refunds. Some of the reasons you may see a number different than you received are:

  • The number you are looking at is your state and federal refunds combined.  Since you say you received your state and IRS refund, it sounds like this could be a possibility. Did your state and IRS refund total the number you are seeing?
  • The IRS made changes to your return and sent you the correct amount.
  • There was an offset, so part of your refund was garnished for delinquent student loans, back taxes, or child support in arrears.
