When filing an amendment, the new refund amount listed, is that additional to what was already filed? Or is that the overall new amount?

We got a tuition form after filing, unexpectedly due to the fact we did not attend college in 2016. When filing the amendment our refund information changes, I just want to know if this is in addition to what was already filed, or if this is the overall refund total.

It would be in addition to any original refund.  The refund meter on the screen only shows the differences in changes from your original and your amendment.  When you print the 1040X to file it, you will see this breakdown.  So, if you were expecting a $1,000 refund from your original return, and then you amended your return and the refund meter shows $200.  You will first get your $1,000 refund on the normal timetable and then you will get the $200 separately.  It takes up to 16 weeks to process amended returns and any refund would be via paper check.
