What signature date should I use to e-file an amended tax return for 2019? (TTX limits end date to 12/31/20)

I wish to e-file a 2019 amended return in TurboTax. I e-filed the original return last year (March 2020) and completed the steps to prepare my amended return in TurboTax this year (March 2021). But TTX does not accept the current date as my signature date and notifies me that "TurboTax e-filing closed for the tax season on Oct. 15, 2020." The IRS site says it supports e-filing for amended 2019 and 2020 returns. Does TurboTax support e-filing amended returns or not? Is there a workaround for the signature date issue? Thank you in advance for any help.

You cannot use TurboTax to e-file a 2019 amended return.

When you finish the amend, you must print the return and mail it.  The first page will have a cover sheet with directions for what to include with the return and the mailing address.  Make sure you sign and date the return before you mail it.

I stumbled across the same issue today.  No idea why it is happening.

Thank you very much for clarifying that. I have printed the amended return from TurboTax to sign by hand and file by mail.

I believe this question has some relevance in this thread, I hope someone can shed light on it for me as it is slightly different and I can't figure out how to submit a new question.

Today is 6/4/2021 and I need to file 2019 Federal and NY State returns for my elderly mother-in-law. She just recently was able to get her complete information to me and it looks like e-file for the 2019 program does not like my signature date of 6/4/2021. Is there any way I can e-file her documents?  Can the signature date be post-dated?

Thanks in advance.

2019 tax returns using TurboTax cannot be e-filed, they can only be printed and mailed.  You will need to change to File by Mail in the File section of the 2019 desktop program.

Today (Feb 5, 2022) can I e-file an ammended return for 2020? Turbox is telling me the signature date must be between Jan 1 and  Dec 31, 2021.

You selected to have the amended tax return e-filed.  The 2020 amended tax return cannot be e-filed.  Change your filing method to File by Mail.

Print, sign and date the amended return.

The responses do not seem accurate. I downloaded the latest TurboTax 2020 software and followed the amended instructions. The software clearly indicates that e-file is now supported. However, when I enter the signature date, it does not accept any date after 12/31/2021. Similar issues with trying to use TurboTax life.

The 2020 amended tax return cannot be e-filed after October 2021.  Change your filing method to File by Mail.

Print, sign and date the amended return.

TurboTax seems to be allowing me to electronically file an amended 2021federal return, and I saw something that said this was possible if you filed the original return via TurboTax electronically. All went well until I got to the signature date. It says today's date is not correct, that it has to be sometime in 2022. What should I do?

A 2021 amended tax return cannot be e-filed using TurboTax after October 15, 2022.  The 2021 amended return can only be printed and mailed.  You will need to change from e-file to Mail in the File section of the program.

I tried to follow your instructions, but I get a message that says, "Don't file returns by mail that have already been transmitted electronically." Maybe software doesn't know it's an amended return?

A prior year amended tax return cannot be e-filed using TurboTax.  In the file section you should use the Mail selection instead of e-file.  The prior year amended return can only be printed and mailed.  You sign the Form 1040-X in ink, date and mail the return to the IRS.

Here's yet another issue with printing. Turbotax is telling me to use Adobe Reader to print the document because "returns printed via software other than Adobe Reader are having issues being recognized by the agencies." I don't even know what that means. It's printed on paper. How can it make a difference what software you use to display it before printing? Plus, my version of Adobe is outdated and apparently there is no update for my Mac OS version. I don't even see that you get a choice in TurboTax about what application is used.

Turbo Tax's own amendment explanation articles say you might be able to e-file amendment for current year and 2 years prior (so current year is 2023, prior 2 years would be 2022, 2021)

And yet I am unable to e-file an amendment for Tax year 2021. It expects correct signature date to be in 2022. Why? It makes absolutely no sense especially when IRS allows it!!

Same concern! Software itself seems to be confused, leading us in circles

@ManjManya

Only certain paid tax pros can still e-file past year amended returns. You cannot e-file an amended past year return that you prepared yourself using TurboTax.  Your 1040X must be printed, signed and dated in ink, and then you need to mail it in.  Use a mailing service like certified mail so you will know the IRS received it, since you will have a long wait for it to be processed.
