What should i do about amending my refund for a 1098-T form

I just filed my 2015 refund the other day and i did not put in my 1098-T form. I went to try and amend it but once i did it told me my refund total was (approx.) $400, when originally it was (approx.) $4000 (before i amended it). Can someone explain what is happening? also will filing the amendment cause a delay on my refund that is already filed.? someone told me that i could wait for my refund to be received then file the amendment. What should i do?

You will need to amend your taxes filing Form 1040X, but amending for 2015 will not be finalized until February 11. See this TurboTax support FAQ on amending a tax return. It will be updated as the 1040X becomes available -https://ttlc.intuit.com/replies/3288565

Also note:

  • Before starting to amend the tax return, wait for the tax refund to be received or the taxes due to be paid and processed by the IRS.
*You're free to cash your refund check or spend it once you have it. You don't need to wait for your amendment to finish processing, which can take another 3-4 months.
*If you owe money after amending, you'll just include payment with your mailed amendment form.
*And if your amendment results in a second refund, you'll get a check for the additional amount.
  • An amended return, Form 1040X, can only be printed and mailed to the IRS, it cannot be e-filed.
  • The IRS will take 12 weeks or longer to process an amended tax return.
  • 3 weeks after you mailed your amendment, you can start tracking its progress at the IRS Where's My Amended Return? site.
