The amount that you owed in taxes prior to the application of your payments and credits.

I believe that is the line identified as Tax, not Tax Expense. So the question remains, what is Tax Expense?

@AnnetteB gives a great explanation of this here. @jlidke @BW1107

You refer to Annette's answer from back in 2019 that I do not think answers this question.  Her answer indicates that the Five Year Tax History report, the TAX EXPENSE row, refers to one's Schedule A itemized deductions.  I have no itemized deductions, yet there is an amount in the 2022 column for TAX EXPENSE that I can't validate.  Can someone still answer this question?  I don't think it has any connection to Schedule A.

Taxes that would be deductible on your federal tax return would be state income tax, sales tax and property taxes. They would all be deductible on schedule A. The state income tax would be picked up from your tax withheld as reported in box 17 and 19 on your W-2 form. They may be listed on the tax history report even though you take the standard deduction.

"Tax Expense" on the Tax History Report is the total of state and local taxes. The number that appears here (as of the 2024 tax year) is limited to $10,000. Because the current standard deduction is greater than $10,000, the tax expense shown on the summary probably is not used in the calculation of your Taxable Income.
