It depends. The IRS issues most refunds from e-filed returns in about 21 days, although some returns take more time to review.

To find out where your refund is, first check your e-file status. If it's been accepted, you can begin to track your refund at the IRS Where's My Refund? site. You'll need your Social Security number or ITIN, filing status, and the exact amount of your refund to check your status.

For some taxpayers, PATH Act requirements and other identity-protection safeguards implemented by the IRS may account for longer wait times.

Other things that can delay your refund include, but are not limited to:

  • Liens, back taxes, or refund offsets
  • Errors, inconsistencies, or missing information
  • Identity fraud
  • Form 8379, Injured Spouse Allocation, which can take 11-14 weeks to process

Also, if you chose direct deposit, your financial institution may need another day or two to post the refund to your account, so keep that in mind.

We filed our taxes in January, they were accepted February 15th, 2021. The Where's my Refund page stated that they were still processing as of yesterday. Today when I checked, it says that I am entering in the wrong information and wants to know when I filed and how I filed. What in the world is going on with the IRS? It has been over a month since we filed and we have not progress other than it is still being processed. Good luck trying to call the IRS because no one is answering the phones. They are all on diversion. Is there any suggestion of what we can do?

The IRS is taking more time than usual to process the returns because of the stimulus and tax law changes.  Good and Bad news- because if your change in status, it is possible the IRS has processed your return but had to make an adjustment which is why the information is not matching.  The best way to reach the IRS by phone is to call when they first open- 7am local time.  Stay strong!
