What if I only paid some interest on my student loan without making any loan payments? When I answer no to the question about making loan payments, I am closed out.

If you made interest only payments on student loans, then you should answer Yes to the question about making loan payments.  You will enter the amount of interest paid for the year on your student loans in that section.  In fact, only interest paid on student loans is deductible - principal payments are NOT deductible.
