When you have prepared your amended return and are ready to mail Form 1040-X you should include the following forms:

  • The new (amended) Form 1040
  • Any forms or schedules that were added or changed as a result of preparing the amendment

You will need to wait until your original tax return is processed by the IRS before filing an amended return. If you are receiving a refund, you should wait until the check is issued or you receive your direct deposit.

Please note that 1040-X cannot be e-filed - you will need to mail a paper return.  It takes the IRS at least 2 - 3 months (and sometime up to 6 months) to process amended returns.  Also, depending on whether the changes affect your numbers, you may also be required to file an amended return with your state.

The mailing address for you state and situation can be found at https://www.irs.gov/pub/irs-pdf/i1040x.pdf.  Look under Where to File on page 14.

@TurboTaxAmyT I had to amend my return because I created an IRA account and made contributions to it for the filing year. This didn't affect my deductions but seems form 8606 is now generated. So mail only 1040x and Form8606 to IRS? From the download from Turboxtax, confused what to do send to CA? Appreciate your help.

You are correct - send the 1040-X and the 8606 to federal.  For California, there probably will not be any changes, as you appear to be just generating the 8606 (which is required for the federal return).  If this is the case, you do not need to mail anything to California.

@TurboTaxAmyT I have to mail in an amended return because of the 1098-c i received last week.  Do i need to mail in the 1098-c with it or is that for my records?
