Was supposed to get back 12k i got back $900…

WHERE IS MY REFUND??? Filed with turbo tax this year and i have had a horrible experience getting my refund. They have tried to say it’s a OFFSET but it’s not and i don’t owe any money to the government. Also my kids are 2 and 4 and they tried to say their age was too old and that i couldn’t receive the credit for them… what i filed compared to what turbo tax has filed this year is completely wrong. Looks like they have stole my money right out from under me… just tried to talk to turbo tax customer support and they sent me around in a circle. Have no clue on how to get back $11,000 I’m owed…

Im so sorry this is happening to you! That is one of the most extreme claims I've seen thus far. Did you make a copy of your taxes once they were completed by TT??

If there's one thing I've learned from this ordeal, it's to get your taxes done in person so you can at least get some feedback. My daughter  filed earned income credit and child tax credit and got her return in 10 days. But she went into an office. You can't get through to the IRS, you can't get through to make an appointment for your local IRS and TurboTax can't answer your questions. So much for filing early.

You should have received a letter from the IRS telling you why your refund amount was changed. The two most common reasons so far this season are:

  1. You did not enter that you received the stimulus payment in TurboTax, so your return said you were getting the money back, but the IRS caught it and said, no, you already received it.
    • If you look at line 30 of your 1040 and it shows an amount there, and you already received the $1,400 per person last year when they sent out the stimulus payments, this is likely the reason.
  2. You did not report the full amount of your Advanced Payments for the Child Tax Credit that you already received.  Again, the IRS will catch this and make the changes to your return.
    • This you can see on line 28.  The amount on that line if you receive the Advance Payments should be one half of what you were eligible for.  If you had 2 kids under 6, you would have been eligible for $7,200 so the correct number would be $3,600 on line 28 if you received Advance Payments.  If it shows $7,200, then you did not enter your advance payments which is why the IRS changed your return.

You should look for a letter from the IRS and if you do not have one or do not receive one, you would need to call the IRS at 800-829-1040 as no one else would have the answer as to why your refund was reduced.

A lot of us are missing thousands, yet the IRS says they kept no offset. And you report all the stimulus you got while filling and it calculates then. Turbo Tax is smellin nefarious. You really should go raise a stink on facebook: https://www.facebook.com/turbotax/

@joy m

TurboTax does not receive any kind of tax refund, federal or state.

Does the IRS website indicate that you were sent less than what was reported on your federal tax return Form 1040 Line 34? - https://www.irs.gov/refunds

If you requested to have the TurboTax account fees deducted from your federal tax refund, the IRS will send the refund to a third party processor to have the fees and the service charge deducted. The third party processor will deduct the TurboTax fees plus the service charge and then attempt to direct deposit the remaining refund balance into the account that you entered on your tax return.

For the status of your tax refund you will need to contact the third party processor, Santa Barbara Tax Product Group, using their website - https://www.sbtpg.com/

@joy m Turbo Tax uses a company called the Santa Barbara Tax Products Group to collect the fees associated with using their software. They are the ones who receive funds from the IRS and take TT's fees. If they are the last have their hands on your funds then you have to take it up with them. Good luck with that! Confirm with the IRS first though. Ask them to put a trace on the refund, to verify where they set it. Or your bank can verify too if you received it via direct deposit.
