"Was anyone else surprised by bank fee to deposit your tax refund?"
Are you referring to the extra $40 service fee that some people have ($45 for California filers)? That's not for direct deposit. Direct deposit is free; the IRS or TurboTax do not charge for it. That optional fee is a service fee if you chose to pay your TurboTax fees out of your Federal refund, which involves a third-party bank to process your refund. That $40/45 fee can be avoided by declining the "pay out of refund" option prior to filing and paying the TurboTax product fees upfront with credit/debit card.
