I received notice from Virginia that a claimed Code 52 on my 2020 return was being disallowed. I can see the amount that the notice lists on my return, but I can't tell where it came from. How can I work backwards from Line 52 on my Virginia return to understand what I entered that wound up on that line?

Verify the line number and the form number.

Assuming you are a resident, start with 2020 Form 760 Resident Individual Income Tax Booklet. VA has a great search box where you can quickly find other things you may need at Virginia Department of Taxation.
