I filed in February, with substantial unemployment income, accepted but did not pay. Updated program shows I still owe, just a lot less, both federal and Utah. Do I just send payment with the new vouchers and the state and IRS will know why, or do I have to make some explanation?
No, you do not need to file an amended Federal return for unemployment benefits. The IRS will be updating your account for the new balance due. You might have to file an amended return for Utah then pay the reduced amount. I could not find where they are adjusting taxpayers accounts for the unemployment benefits change. You will want to check with your Utah income tax revenue office. Either way, I would only pay the new amounts. For the Fed, you can send in the 1040-V form with the new amount. Once the adjustment comes through, you will be fine. For Utah, you may need to submit an amended return but check with them first. Here is a link to the Utah Tax Contact page.
