TurboTax generated a new 1040 along with a 1040X amendment. Do I submit both?

If you are amending your return, no, don't send the new 1040 form with your 1040X form. The 1040X reflects the changes. However, you do have to include any new or corrected documents only if they show federal income tax withheld. When assembling your return, include, in order, only those sequence numbered tax forms that changed or were added, due to your amendment (1040X).

  • Attachment Sequence Number is on all the forms that come after 1040X.

I just want to confirm that you needed to amend your tax return. Is that correct?

Yes.  I had capital gains reported late.

Great, then my answer is correct. I wasn't sure if the form was generated by accident. Hope you have great 2019 and thank you for using TurboTax!

Do we need to sign both the 1040X and the 1040?

Yes, sign and date both 1040X and 1040.

Could you tell me, are you using the CD\Download version of TurboTax? Some of our Online customers aren't able to access 1040X and I was wondering if the updated 1040 X has been updated in TurboTax CD\Download but is pending for Online TurboTax. Thank you.

I used the CD version.  Do I also submit the certification of electronic filing that was generated along with the other forms?

Thank you so much! No, you don't have to submit that form. Keep it for your records.

It was brought to my attention that you do not have to submit the new 1040 however you do need to submit any new/corrected documents only if it shows federal tax withheld. You would include, in order, only those sequence numbered tax forms that changed or were added due to your amendment. See fanfare's answer below.

How to file:

Do not include your old 1040 nor your revised 1040 because the Form 1040X reflects any changes there and becomes your new tax return.

Include any new/corrected document only if it shows federal tax withheld, and include in order only those Sequence Numbered tax forms that changed or were added due to your amendment.

Attachment Sequence Number is on all the forms that come after 1040.

Mail to the address shown for your location in the Instructions for Form 1040X.
