TurboTax customer support alerted us to a software error and suggested we amend our Fed 2020 return, but it hasn't been processed. Can we apply the refund to 2021?

The problem was when you have multiple 1098 entries, TurboTax was only calculating the first one. In our case that meant we payed over 2K more then we needed to, so we filed the amended return with the correction.
Amended return was received by IRS in August 2021, but hasn't been processed still. Have called dozens of times, but the line just says they are busy and to try again another day. I'm guessing we can apply the refund to 2021 (it's a bit more then we owe).

When you file an amended return you can apply the refund to a future year, but you have to do it when you file the amended return. Since you have already filed your 2020 amended return, you can't change it now to apply the refund to 2021.
