Trying to file an amended 2021 return but Turbotax won't allow me to enter a payment date in 2023. Plus it is adding the amount I already paid to the additional amount.

Ok ... a prior year amended return must be mailed in with the payment if one is needed.  Do not complete the FILE tab ... instead use the print center to print the return ... in the downloaded program click on the word FILE in the upper left corner then choose PRINT.

If you need to change line 16  then switch to the FORMS mode and make a direct line entry to reflect the amount you have already paid the IRS.

Look at the form 1040X …

Column A should have the figures from the original return, Column C the corrected figures and Column B the differences between the other 2 which needs an explanation on page 2 of the form 1040X.

If you completed it correctly you will see an entry on either line 16 OR 18:

On line 16 should be the amount you paid with your original return. If you paid nothing already then this line should be zero.

On line 18 should be the amount of your original refund you received.  If you have not received your refund yet then you need to wait for it.  If the refund changes from what you expected then this line must reflect that change.

Then you will see your extra refund on line 22 OR  the new balance due you need to pay on line 20.

I am getting a refund and Turbotax won't allow me to efile the 1040x either. The page that says "under penalty of perjury" has a field for "today's date" at the bottom. When I fill it out with 02/25/2023, TT rejects the date as invalid because "Your signature date must be on or after 01/01/2022 through 12/31/2022." I grimaced and put in 12/31/2022 (even though that's false)  but it STILL doesn't accept it because the date is incorrect. The Turbotax 2021 program was completely updated before I started the  amended return, and supposedly the IRS has been accepting 1040x by efile for three years already, so it isn't as though this is a brand new way to submit amended returns.

Turbo Tax will only allow an e-file of the amended return for the 2022 tax year. Any year 2021 and prior must be printed and mailed.
