"The taxpayer has already been claimed as a dependent on another return." What does this mean? My father didn't claim me on his taxes? I have no idea whats going on.

I'm super confused.

Firstly, does it make sense that you are a dependent of another taxpayer? Does someone else provide your support? Are you a student and/ or child/ young person? Obviously, you should ensure that your father has the right to claim you.

If he does, you need to indicate that you are being claimed as a dependent on another return:

  • Go back into Turbo Tax
  • Click on the Personal Info tab
  • Click the Edit pencil next to your name
  • scroll down to Someone else can claim me as a dependent on their tax return and click Yes
  • continue to refile your return

You can still file a tax return if you have income and are being claimed as a dependent. You just need to make the notation above.

If the IRS says someone else claimed you, a parent is the most likely culprit.

You have to print and mail your return this year.  Once a ssn has been filed you can't efile it again.  He has to amend his return to take you off.  But you don't need to wait for him to amend since you have to mail yours.
