AnswerXhange is an online public forum, so we are not able to see your tax return. You are using TurboTax Live Deluxe. Please read the TurboTax FAQ, listed below, on how to connect to a live agent to assist you with form 8938.

I have the same issue.  Was not a problem in previous years.  If there is no solution soon I'll have to manually fill-in a Form 8938 and include it in my return (I'm mailing it).

The most common reason for this is that the assets entered do not meet the threshold for filing based on the answers to the questions in this section.  The threshold differs for taxpayers living inside of the U.S. and for those who reside outside of the U.S.

Revisit the section to be sure you have indicated the correct answer regarding whether you live inside or outside of the U.S. and then verify that you are required to file based on the following parameters:

  • Unmarried taxpayers living in the US: The total value of your specified foreign financial assets is more than $50,000 on the last day of the tax year or more than $75,000 at any time during the tax year

  • Married taxpayers filing a joint income tax return and living in the US: The total value of your specified foreign financial assets is more than $100,000 on the last day of the tax year or more than $150,000 at any time during the tax year

  • Married taxpayers filing separate income tax returns and living in the US: The total value of your specified foreign financial assets is more than $50,000 on the last day of the tax year or more than $75,000 at any time during the tax year.

  • Taxpayers living abroad.  You are a taxpayer living abroad if:

    • You are a U.S. citizen whose tax home is in a foreign country and you are either a bona fide resident of a foreign country or countries for an uninterrupted period that includes the entire tax year, or
    • You are a US citizen or resident, who during a period of 12 consecutive months ending in the tax year is physically present in a foreign country or countries at least 330 days.

If you are a taxpayer living abroad you must file if:

    • You are filing a return other than a joint return and the total value of your specified foreign assets is more than $200,000 on the last day of the tax year or more than $300,000 at any time during the year; or
    • You are filing a joint return and the value of your specified foreign asset is more than $400,000 on the last day of the tax year or more than $600,000 at any time during the year.

Frequently taxpayers residing in the U.S. will accidentally indicate that they live outside of the U.S. and then the assets are below the requirements to file so the form is not generated.

If this does not resolve your issue, please let us know and we will try to troubleshoot the issue further.

Thanks, so much, this was helpful.  However, I am required to submit the Form 8938 as the below covers my case:

If you are a taxpayer living abroad you must file if:

You are filing a return other than a joint return and the total value of your specified foreign assets is more     than $200,000 on the last day of the tax year or more than $300,000 at any time during the year;...

TurboTax itself indicated I needed to fill in and submit the form and collected the details.  It seems rather that it is not saving the details.  When I went back into 'amend' the information, the section was empty and I had to re-enter it.

Thanks,

B.

As a follow up, I ended up going in and re-doing the whole (foreign) income section, then got prompted to see if foreign income exclusion was an option, filling in travel days in the US again, etc then finally the questions about foreign accounts.  This time it saved them and Form 8938 came along when printing out.  It was not enough to search for Form 8938 and the 'jump to' that and fill it in (as mentioned in some FAQ's).    So the problem is gone, although not entirely sure what triggered it or what I did differently.

Thanks again @SusanY1 for your help though.

The reason the form does not attach to the return is because you have to start the information by selecting the foreign income question.  If you type in 8938 and jump to it only goes to the foreign accounts page and after you fill all the accounts in it erases your information because you do not have the foreign bank accounts box checked yes.  Once that box is checked all the information from the accounts will print on a form 8938.

I also tried this, but it didn't work. Can't say whether it worked in your case, but definitely did not for me.

I have the same issue this year.   I posted the question below.  I meet the threshold to report.  I don't know if it's a glitch but when I talked to one of their LIVE experts online they couldn't seem to entertain the idea it's anything other than user error.

@MarilynG1    you state no "known" issue... I think perhaps you mean TT does not "acknowledge" there might be an issue.  There are several different posts on this topic with several people not getting a resolution.  I presume they "know" about the issue.   And btw I did screen share with a specialist of 12 years experience thru LIVE and they understood the issue and couldn't explain it....they suggested I input the information a 3rd time and immediately file, hardly reassuring advice given it the info did drop again then presumably I'd have to file an amendment.

The same has happened to me this year. I entered the details twice. First they disappeared. I thought perhaps I did something wrong. Entered them again and saw to it that they were saved. But the details on Form 8938 were not submitted. I am so upset. I could not even contact anyone from TurboTax. Will never ever use their software again. Will spread word actively to my friends, neighbors and relatives to NOT use them at all.
