Taxes Paid Twice

In an effort to provide bank account information to the IRS, my taxes were paid twice. I've googled how to go about getting a refund of the over-payment, but my scenario doesn't apply to the ones provided and filing an amended return isn't an appropriate solution for me.

I've lost my job due to the pandemic and can't get through to the TWC to file for unemployment, I have not received my stimulus check and I have no money to pay bills. I really need the IRS to refund the over-payment. What should I do?

Unfortunately, you will have to wait until the IRS fully reopens. When it does, you will want to call them at 800 829 1040 and explain the issue.

Ugh....happened to me, too. My husband and I are sweating it...we haven’t received our stimulus money AND we paid twice.

HELP!

When I filed my 2019 taxes, I owed $2,716. I filed and indicated to have the IRS take out my payment + the $20 penalty on 6/30/20. They did that correctly.

My problem is that I paid them in full prior to 6/30, through the IRS Direct payment site. ($1,318 on 4/21 and $1,398 on 5/26.)

Thinking that the IRS would have noticed that I already paid my tax debt, they would not have taken out the auto debit on 6/30.

I was wrong and as a result, I have paid $2,716 too much.

How do I get that duplicate payment back?

I called the IRS Direct Payment people and they can not help me.  All they can do is direct me to the General IRS phone number, I feel that I need to talk to a human to resolve this. The automated service can not help me.

What do I do?

Thank you
