TAX 2020 AMENDMENT

Hello everyone so two weeks ago I filed my taxes(my first time) , I thought my parents will claim me as a dependent so I checked that little box where it says dependent,  but turns out they didn't.  Do I have to amend this tax year to change from depend to independent? Also  , would this help me  get the stimulus check?.

No, you're not eligible for the stimulus because you were claimed as a dependent on your parents 2019 tax return. See How will the second stimulus impact me?

Yes, you should amend your income tax return if you're no longer a dependent and if changing your dependency status results in a higher refund or amount due.

  • Wait for the IRS to process your income tax return before you amend.

NOTE: At this time, you're not able to  amend a 2020 income tax return. As of today, it's estimated that the IRS will finalize the 1040X form on 03/25/2021. However check the forms availability to see any updates to that date.

Generally, Form 1040-X,  Amended U.S. Individual Income Tax Return, must be filed within three years of the date the original return was filed, or within two years of the date the tax was paid, whichever is later.
