If the IRS encounters any problem sending the direct deposit, they change it to a check sent by mail. They don't spend any time trying to figure out why the direct deposit didn't work, or trying to make it work. Also, they will not send more than three direct deposit refunds to the same bank account. Any additional refunds are sent by mail.
In any case, there's nothing you can do about it at this point, so just wait for the check to come in the mail.
You could try asking your bank whether they rejected the direct deposit, and if so, why. That might help you figure out what went wrong and possibly correct it for next year. But it's possible that the direct deposit never got to your bank. If you talk to someone at the bank, also ask them what the correct routing number is for direct deposits, and make sure you entered it correctly. Also double-check the account number that you entered.

my account number is correct...could it be that the refund amount was too much to be deposited?
I am getting same thing this year. Early PATH filer getting large amount back. I have had no issues and no bad codes and my state went DD. It says will be mailed by 03/01. Any updates from last year?
@sborner same exact thing happening here. This has never happened to me before so I’m confused on why my state refund was able to be direct deposited but not my federal.
IT HAS to be like the TT lady said and just a system glitch. Someone updated a field incorrectly or similar! Lets post here if you find anything outnor get a deposit. I simply cannot go on the Igotmyrefund.com site or FB page as it is full of crappy untrue information via guesses!
If I was a betting man I would say we are 02/27 ddd otherwise I am pissed as I see PATH filers who submitted 02/14 and 02/22 WITH A DDD!!!!! Next year I wait!
I'm having same problem, always have gotten dd in the same account. I'm being told it's being MAILED out March 1st...I'm so confused as to why.
Please if yall find out anything post here! Maybe we will still get a dd....
I had fees coming out, how is that bank.going to get those now if there are mailing me a check??
have any of yourl checked taxpayer.sbtpg.com to see what that says and does it match your amount received.
has anyone had any trouble on the wheres my refund site...it doesn't tell me when i am getting my refund...it keeps giving the generic message....
I recommended going to irs.gov and creating an account. For verify you will need a credit card account or home loan or car loan under your social security #. Once logged in you can request to download your transcripts. Find the account transcript and look at the codes at bottom. 846 is the refund approved. Look for cycle code and processing date and reply with that otherwise I would be guessing. Filed and Accepted dates?
i'm getting the same message, that it is being mailed, i have DD, i think/hope it,s just a glitch
I’m getting the same message as well and I asked for DD. It better be a glitch.
Same irs message also, upon reviewing my paperwork, the signature block is blank, spouse and i did the electronic signature. cant access last years filing wo paying for it , e filed & received dd last year w/o incident. is anyone else's signature block that e-filed blank? just curious... sometimes its all in the details
@branbran719 mine is blank but I was able to look at last years and it was also blank, but I still received DD. Hopefully this is just a glitch on the IRS website.
For those that are getting this message also...unexpectedly that is, Is your return over or under 10k? If you aren't comfortable posting I understand but curious as mine is over 10k and I saw posted elsewhere that over 10k is always a paper check. I am also 100% positive this is untrue as I got DD 2 years back with a return over 10k. Let me know 🙂
Where did you see this at because I don’t see any publication limiting the amounts.
I can't remember but likely on one of those boards full of liars. I have since found this:
The IRS has no dollar limit on direct deposit of refunds. However, direct deposit must only be made to accounts bearing the taxpayer's name. ... The fourth and subsequent refunds automatically will convert to a paper refund check and be mailed to the taxpayer. For more information, see IRS Direct Deposit Limits.
I also read that they are randomly selecting some refunds for paper checks but that is probably BS also.
thanks for looking up the signature, much appreciated . our return is over 10K, and i read the same thing about the deposit being over 10K with banks required to report deposits exceeding 10K. last year ours was over 13K and a dd was made w/o issue using intuit. here's hoping its all a glitch &/or the postal service is swift w those checks!
Ok so I took my commute home time to wait on hold for IRS and got one of the script call center cowboys that started telling me that EITC didnt get processing until 02/15 etc...I pissed him off by cutting him off and explaining that we are way past that and I am approved but the problem and question is WHY AM I GETTING A PAPER CHECK! He came back with...it could be a myriad of reasons and it could be your bank rejected it blah blah..I just gave up and didn't mention that my state was DD and it came ZERO ISSUES! Sorry folks...I tried
