Resident alien with resident alien spouse filing jointly. Wife doesn’t have SSN so left it blank. TurboTax omitted her name from state return, can’t amend or write it on.

NY STATE. Wife unemployed, applied for ITIN through federal, no place to enter this on state return. Not sure why TurboTax left spouse name, DOB etc. fields blank as now finalised return and can’t amend. Can’t imagine it will be accepted with spouse name being absent on a joint return and I can’t write on the printed document. What do I do?

The state return will need to be amended after the ITIN is issued.  You should be able to complete this in TurboTax.    Presently, the IRS is taking around 4-6 weeks to process ITIN applications.

The IRS places this number for you on federal returns but, of course, they are not involved in your state return.

Since your return was filed without this information, I would recommend coming back in a few weeks after the ITIN is received to amend the return to add this information.

In the meantime, if you receive any correspondence from the state, reply to let them know you are waiting for an ITIN to be issued.

To clarify, was you wife completely omitted from the IT-201 NYS form? Go back through your NYS return and run the review in the end. When a message appears asking for your wife's social security number, type in NRA. See if this clears up the issue.

Correct, there are four big empty spaces on the IT-203 beneath my name, surname, date of birth and SSN, where my wife’s details should be. When I click the amend (change) option and click amend through TurboTax online it then tells me the section will be ready February 15.

Tried entering NRA in wife's SSN box - the software won't accept letters, only numbers

So I have filed my federal return and applied for an ITIN for my wife. It seems like the number format for the ITIN is the same as SSN so once we receive the ITIN I will enter it on the NY state return. However, this will mean I have to wait a some time before I can file the state return. Do you have any other suggestions? Thanks again

The other option would be to print the New York return, write NRA in the space for Social Security Number and mail the New York return.

Can certainly do this but big capital letters in the margin tell me not to write on the form and TurboTax warning reiterates this. I would need to fill in all my spouses details by hand since TurboTax didn't pull this through for some reason. Any ideas why the other details are not being pulled though to the return?

Yes, this does seem to be an issue that needs to be resolved. I would suggest calling phone support here to see why you wife's name is not populated on he form.

Ok thanks, is there any other way to contact given we are in the UK?
