Received 1099-SA After Filing Taxes

My W2 already listed HSA information but then I got a 1099-SA showing a disbursement of a larger amount.

I chose to amend my tax return and entered the new 1099-SA but Turbotax says that nothing changed between the file return and the amended return.

Any ideas how to proceed?

Go ahead and file your amended return, even though TurboTax indicates no change.

Generally, if there's no change to your balance due or refund on your return, you won't need to amend.

However, the IRS has received the same Form 1099-SA data that you have.  You need to report that information on your return, and the fact that (apparently) you used the disbursement for qualified medical expenses.

If you don't, the IRS will most likely assume that the unreported amount is taxable and send you a notice.

You will get Form 1099-SA if you paid for medical or other expenses from your HSA or MSA during the tax year.

If you have e-filed your 2020 Federal tax return, and the IRS accepts the tax return, you will have to amend the tax return after you receive your refund.

If you have e-filed your 2020 Federal tax return, and the IRS rejects the tax return, you will be able to add IRS form 1099-SA and then correct the issues related to the e-file rejection.

Enter the 1099-SA by following these steps.

  • Select the appropriate box(es) and Continue.
  • Answer Yes when asked if you us
  • Inside your program, at the magnifying glass in the upper right hand corner of the screen Search for 1099-SA;
  • Select Jump To 1099-SA. This will take you to the Tell us about the health-related accounts you had in 2020 screen.
  • Answer Yes when asked if you used your HSA or MSA to pay for anything.
