Received 1099-DIV after submitting taxes

I submitted my taxes on 2/11 and received my 1099-DIV on 2/15. I forgot about selling stocks due to the proceeds not being very much. Is my best course of action to receive my tax return then file an amendment or wait for the IRS to reach out? Thanks

Both alternatives are correct.  The IRS requires taxpayers to prepare their taxes as "essentially correct', some errors are considered de minimums.

  • Regardless, you should wait until your initial return is completely processed before you do an amended return.
  • If there is a significant problem with your return you will receive a CP2000 letter from the IRS.
  • The CP2000 will describe the discrepancy, and propose the tax adjustment.
  • If you do get a letter, there will be no need to do an amended return.
