Our son left for Army BCT July 23, 2017 & turned 18 on November 27, 2017. Can we claim him as a dependent on our 2018 taxes without being reprimanded?

He will file his own taxes as well.

If you provided more than half of his support in 2017, you can claim your son as a dependent.

Your son will file his own tax return if he has income. He'll need to indicate on his return that he can be claimed as a dependent by someone else.
