On my original 2024 return I am supposed to get a refund of $1021. Then I amended the return and line 37 states I owe $395. but the final amount owed is $1416. Why ?

Why do I owe $1416.

The $1,416 is coming from adding the refund amount to the tax owed.  When you amend, the counter is set to zero when you start.  Since your federal return was processed with a refund the amount you were paid will need to be paid back ($1021 refund + $395 tax due = $1,416).  If you have not received your refund yet and your federal return has been processed, you will still get the refund.  If your federal return has not been processed and you have not filed your amended return, you will need to wait until your federal return has processed and preferable after you receive the refund before you amend the return.
