mysterious email followed by fraudulent ACH bank charge

I filed my taxes yesterday around 7:00pm, then around 10:00pm I got an email from TurboTax titled "Your TurboTax account has been updated" and said "Your 2017 tax return was accessed." I checked my bank of America account and I see an ACH eBay charge for $19.56 for the same bank account I used for the tax return. I called TurboTax Support at [phone number removed] and was on hold for 70 minutes before the call suddenly ended! I never got to talk to an agent. Was my TurboTax account hacked? What information was compromised? What steps do you recommend I do to safeguard my identity?

Hi there!

First, you can check your account activity here: https://ttlc.intuit.com/questions/3996673 That will allow you to see when your account was accessed and on what devices.

Second, if you suspect tax fraud or are concerned about the safety of your account, read through this FAQ: https://ttlc.intuit.com/questions/1900655 There are details on how to contact us and what action steps you can take. Please note: Since today is the filing deadline, phone support may have a longer wait time.

Finally, and please forgive me if this is a silly request, if you have an ebay account, you could also check that and just make sure there wasn't a charge made through your ebay account.

Let me know if you have further questions!

Thank you for the reply, I have reviewed the activity on the account and I think I can account for those accesses.  I have checked my eBay account and there were no recent purchases and nothing with that amount.

I'm glad the accesses are accounted for! Perhaps ebay support can help you figure out what the charge is (not sure if you ever sell on ebay or anything like that), or you can contact your bank. If you need further assistance from us, let me know!
