My wife is a permanent resident waiting for a SSN. W-7 says not applicable. And we are up against Oct 15th deadline. How should we file jointly if her SSN isn't here yet?

We filed the extension to allow time for her SSN to show up. We are not overdue on the wait period for the green card yet. Can I file jointly and print the document and mail it in with a letter stating we are waiting for her SSN?
