My taxes were accepted April 7 but only the state ones have been pulled out of my bank account.

When I go back into my turbotax product (I purchased the CD version from Costco) to double-check that I opted to pay immediately, I can't get back to that screen to verify.  Is there a way to make sure this is going through so that I'm not penalized?

In a normal season, the IRS will debit your account on the date you specified or soon after.  We have had several reports of the IRS not debiting accounts on the scheduled date. Just be patient -- the IRS will take your money!

If you want to check the debit date you specified, look on the filing instructions for your return.  It will tell you the debit date the IRS or State will deduct the payment.  If you did not print them out you can view them using the following steps:

TurboTax Online

To get back into your return after printing or e-filing, please follow these steps:

  1. In TurboTax Online, sign into your account.

  2. You should be on your Tax Home page.

  3. Scroll down to Your tax returns & documents.

  4. Select 2020, and then select Add a State (you're not actually adding a state, this just gets you into the right menu).

  5. Once you're in your return, you can navigate around as usual.

  6. Click Tax Tools (in the black bar on the left of your screen) and then click select Print Center.

  7. Click Print, save or preview this year's return

TurboTax CD/Download

  1. Go into Forms Mode by clicking on the Forms icon in the top right of the blue bar.

  2. In the Forms in My Return list on the left, click Filing Inst.  [It's usually toward the bottom of the list.]  The form will appear on the right side of the screen.

  3. You can view the form on the screen or you can print a copy by clicking the Print box at the bottom of the screen.

  4. To return to the interview, click on the Step-By-Step icon in the top right of the blue bar.

The IRS does take some time to withdraw funds. They are backlogged. Try waiting up to a few days before the May 17 deadline before prompting a secondary means of payment. Otherwise, it could end up that you double pay and then have to wait for a refund.

To determine if there is a problem, check your account here: IRS: View Your Tax Account Information

If the payment has still not been withdrawn and you are within a few days of May 17, go to IRS Paying Your Taxes for options or see 2020 Form 1040 Instructions, page 62. Payment options include:

DO NOT make a direct payment online without cancelling the original debit or the payment will happen twice and it will take months to get the error resolved.

If you selected Direct Debit from your bank account to pay the Federal taxes owed, that information was sent with your e-filed federal tax return.

Look at the Federal Information Worksheet in Part V.  The bank name, routing number, account number and the date you selected to pay the taxes owed will be entered.  If you did not select Direct Debit from your bank account then nothing will be in Part V.  Look on your Federal Filing Instruction page for how you selected to pay the Federal taxes owed.

To access your current or prior year online tax returns sign onto the TurboTax website with the userID you used to create the account - https://myturbotax.intuit.com/

When you sign onto your online account and land on the Tax Home web page, scroll down and click on Add a state.

This will take you back to the 2020 online tax return.

Click on Tax Tools on the left side of the online program screen.  Then click on Print Center.  Then click on Print, save or preview this year's return.  Choose the option Include government and TurboTax worksheets

For the State taxes owed the same type of information will be on the State Information Worksheet in Part V of the worksheet and on the State Filing Instructions page.

However most states, if not all, do not allow state taxes owed to be paid by Direct Debit when using tax preparation software.  They require the payment by Direct Debit only when using the State tax authorities website.

NOW IF EVERYTHING IS CORRECT :

be patient as the IRS is way behind in processing balance due returns so write the amount off in your account and one day it will be gone.  The debit could take months like they did last year so just be patient ... the ball is in the IRS court now.

BUT IF THE DEBIT INFO IS INCORRECT OR MISSING :

you have until 5/17 to make the payment either by mailing in a check or paying directly online as www.IRS.gov/payments ... if you owe the state see your state's website for payment options.

Update:  I found on my form that I had instructed the taxes owed to the feds be debited on 4/8/21.  They were just debited on 4/21.21.

We used Turbotax to debit both our Federal and State tax due. We got a letter from the IRS saying our debit request was rejected and so we used the recommended Credit card payment listed on the IRS letter. 13 days later we got another letter from the IRS saying we owed the original amount plus penalty and interest even though we got a confirmation of our credit card payment from PayUSA and our credit card statement shows that payment. When we tried using the Check Your Payment Status the website said our confirmation was invalid. We checked our State debit and found out it was not withdrawn either and the state did not tell us and now we owe interest and penalties on that as well.

It looks to me like Turbotax did something wrong with the debit payments because I checked with the bank and they said no attempts were made or denied. I believe Turbotax is at fault and should be covering  the penalties and interest. This is a mess! Why should I ever trust Turbotax again? I've been using TT almost from the beginning. I'm VERY perturbed by this!

@NJRitter When you selected to pay the taxes owed by direct debit from your bank account, you entered the bank routing number and the bank account number to be used for the direct debit.  Those are the numbers that were sent with your e-filed tax returns to the IRS and to the State.

Look at the Filing Instructions for the Federal tax return and for the State tax return.  How you chose to pay the taxes owed will be shown along with the routing and account numbers you entered plus the payment date selected.  Also on the Federal Information Worksheet and the State Information Worksheet in Part V of the worksheets will be name of the bank along with the routing and account numbers you entered.
