My ex girlfriend (never married) and i both filed our son as our independent. she e filed and had to mail in my tax return . will we both get the return ? untimd

Lived with me . he has my address . she actually lived with me as well. We separated towards the end of the year. Around september . she started working a little after

As both of you claimed the same dependent on your respective tax returns, the IRS will send a letter to each of you asking for proof of dependency and will decide who can claim your son. Generally, the custodial parent will get to claim the dependent and the other parent will have his claim denied and may be assessed extra taxes.
