If your return has already been accepted, and the bank information you provided is for a closed or invalid account, the government will mail you a refund check. Once your return has been accepted (or mailed), it's too late to change your bank account information or your refund method.

If the info you entered is someone else's account, don't worry – some banks won't deposit tax refunds into accounts where names don't match up.  The best way for you to track your federal refund is to call the IRS at 1-800-829-1040.

If your recently-filed return is in  pending  status, wait until it's either accepted or rejected.

  • If rejected, you can update your account and any issues that caused the rejection.   Open your return in TurboTax and go through the File section again to update your bank account before re-submitting your return.
  • If accepted, you'll get your refund check in the mail.

Your best option is to contact the IRS and they can tell you what your options are.

Here is information on how you can reach the IRS by phone for further assistance:

So my return from last year was deposited December 22 2021 and it went to a closed account. My bank returned it on the 23 of December that same year but the irs has kept saying they haven’t received any money back and it’s march 2022. I have no idea what to do

If the information you provided is for a closed or invalid account, the government will mail you a refund check once the rejected tax deposit from the bank is received back to the IRS.

  • If you have contacted the financial institution and two weeks have passed with no results, you will need to file Form 3911, Taxpayer Statement Regarding Refund PDF to initiate a trace. This allows the IRS to contact the bank on your behalf to attempt recovery of your refund. Banks are allowed up to 90 days from the date of the initial trace input to respond to our request for information.

@Montvant - the IRS does not permit changes to bank account information once the return is filed - that is to protect you against fraud.

once the direct deposit fails, the IRS will send a paper check to the address you used when you filed.

I have two stimulus check that were deposited from two years ago. One 600$ and a 1200$. The bank account was closed. The 600 one was returned but the 1200 dollar one was accepted and not returned. The claim they didn't receive it but I got a deposit date from the IRS. It was June 24 th of 2020. I don't know what to do. No one can tell me.

Generally, if the financial institution recovers the funds and returns them to the IRS, the IRS will send a paper refund check to your last known address on file with the IRS.

Since your financial institution claims they did not receive your stimulus payment, you will need to file Form 3911 (Taxpayer Statement Regarding Refund) to initiate a trace. This allows the IRS to contact the bank on your behalf to attempt recovery of your refund. Banks are allowed up to 90 days from the date of the initial trace input to respond to our request for information.

If funds aren't available or the bank refuses to return the funds, the IRS cannot compel the bank to do so. The case may then become a civil matter between you and the financial institution and/or the owner of the account into which the funds were deposited.

Please see the link below from the IRS website for additional information including the link to Form 3911.
