My bank account info disappeared when filing

I am pretty sure I put in the correct bank routing/account numbers into TurboTax Desktop before e-filing my federal return, but got a letter from the IRS saying it was missing and I need to pay a different way.  How can that happen - or how can I check now if I entered the wrong number?

I may have skipped to 'print for review' or something else between entering the numbers and filing, but the printed copy just shows x's in the number fields.  Would that make TT drop the numbers - and shouldn't it have warned me when filing if it did?

The X's show for the bank routing and account numbers if you view or print the tax return before it was accepted by the IRS.

If you entered a bank name, routing and account numbers for a direct debit from your bank account along with the date of payment, that information is on your Federal Information Worksheet.

Click on Forms.  When in Forms mode open the Federal Information Worksheet if not already displayed.  Click on Info Wks on the left side of the screen.

With the Worksheet opened scroll down to Part V where the bank information you entered should be shown.

Contact the phone number on the IRS tax notice, and make arrangements for the payment.

  • I can't be sure of what happened on the tax return, but you can correct it next year.
  • If just one number is off, the IRS would not be able to access your account for payment.

Thanks, there was a digit missing from the account number in the form view - my eyes aren't that great anymore...   I'll follow the directions in the letter to pay now.
