My amended returns say I owe money because they are assuming I have already received the refunds on my original returns, How can I resolve this?

I am trying to amend through TurboTax since I filed my 2024 taxes with them. It is telling me that I owe money and is telling me to set up a payment schedule before submitting. I have not received my refund and do not expect to received it, as I was informed by a representative from the IRS to amend it and make the necessary changes needed for my return to be properly processed.

Your amended return should reflect what you owe to the IRS had your taxes been completed correctly. You should not amend your return until it has been fully processed by the IRS.

The amended return will show the difference you owe, or that you will get back as a refund. When you look at your amended tax return, line 18, you will see your original refund amount. Is that what you are asking about?  Normally you would not amend a tax return that has not been fully processed.  You would get your refund back and then amend.

If you explain your situation a little more, it will be easier to help you. Did the IRS process your tax return or reject it? Did they tell you to amend your tax return or fix it and re-file?

sometimes you will get the wrong advice from the IRS phone-call agent.

However if the IRS said your 1040 is on hold waiting for 1040-X,

you still have to assume you will get that refund and file 1040-X accordingly.

if the IRS said your 1040 is on hold waiting for 1040-X, I'd call again and get a confirmation of that from a different agent.
