I amended my return to add a 1099-int for HSA distributions that were used for medical expenses and used turbo tax to create the amended return. Line 19 indicates if less than zero, see instructions. Line 20 has nothing on it which would indicate to me that I owe nothing. Did turbo tax do this correctly?
First ... do NOT amend the return before you have received the original refund !!!
Then ... Look at the form 1040X …
Column A should have the figures from the original return, Column C the corrected figures and Column B the differences between the other 2 which needs an explanation on page 2 of the form 1040X.
If you completed it correctly you will see an entry on either line 16 OR 18:
On line 16 should be the amount you paid with your original return.
On line 18 should be the amount of your original refund you received.
Then you will see your extra refund on line 22 OR the new balance due you need to pay on line 20.
If line 18 is larger than line 17, line 19 will be negative. You will owe additional tax. To figure the amount owed, treat the amount on line 19 as positive and add it to the amount on line 11. Enter the result on line 20.
I have not turned in my amended return yet and I have already received a refund. My amended return that turbo tax created only has info on three lines. There is a zero on line 16. Line 18 has the amount of my return (844). Line 19 has a negative number which is the negative amount of my return (-844) From your instructions this would indicate that I owe the amount of my refund which is confusing. I only amended the return to add the 1099-SA that shows my HSA distributions which were all used for qualified medical expenses. These distributions should not be taxable. So I don't understand why the 1040-x would indicate that I do owe taxes. If I have misinterpreted this I would greatly appreciate help understanding it. Thank you.
Line 19—Amount Available To Pay Additional Tax
If line 18 is larger than line 17, line 19 will be negative. You will
owe additional tax. To figure the amount owed, treat the amount
on line 19 as positive and add it to the amount on line 11. Enter
the result on line 20.
you may have done something wrong on the amended return. the only way 19 can be negative is if your refund (line 18) was greater than your total payments. (line17). if your original return reflected a refund of $844 that should be the amounting line18.
If you are only amending to add a form 8889 and the amount on line 14A and 15 are the same then there should be NO change on the 1040X ... you must have done something incorrectly.
Upon further review the 1040X is correct ... you do not have any entry on lines 20 or 22 so you owe nothing and get nothing. Sign the return and attach the 8889 and mail it.
I have been trying to file a 1040x for my step son this week and its slightly confusing. My lines 17 and 18 are the same....I used the tax table for lines 6. On his first filing the W2 he recorded has 36.50 fed withheld and his refund was 37 so he got it all back? Now on the new W2 he needs to amend there is no federal withheld at all.
Line 1 | 806.00 | 4907.31 | 5713.31 |
Line 2 | 12200.00 | - | 12200.00 |
Line 3 | 11394.00 | 4907.31 | 6486.69 |
Line 4b | - | - | - |
Line 5 | 11394.00 | 4907.31 | 6486.69 |
Line 6 (Tax Table 2019) | 1171.00 | 493.00 | 1664.00 |
Line 8 | 1171.00 | 493.00 | 1664.00 |
Line 11 | 1171.00 | 493.00 | 1664.00 |
Line 12 | 37 | 0 | 37.00 |
line 17 | 37.00 | ||
Line 18 | 37.00 | ||
Line 19 | 0.00 | ||
Line 20 | 1664.00 |
So does this mean he owes taxes? I can only assume because he didn't withhold anything on his W2.
Did you get a corrected W2-C ?
None of the numbers displayed makes sense.
If no tax was withheld Line 12C should be zero.
If nothing was paid so far, but $37 was refunded, the amount you owe line 20 is
Line 11 + $37
Line 11 depends on the correct taxable income.
Line 3 column is WRONG so the rest is wrong ... 806 minus 12,200 (same with column C) cannot be a negative number it should be zero ... you cannot possibly have negative income. And if all he made was 4900 in wages he would not only not owe there is no reason to even file an amended return since there was no withheld taxes to get. Review the entire form again starting with line 3.
