military resident

HELP!! last year I filed my taxes with the state I was stationed at instead of my home of residency per this was my 1st duty station so I didn't know what state to put at the time and now I'm hearing I have to put the state I lived at before I was active duty but if I change the state we reside at to my hometown will it affect my refund like would I have to owe Hawaii since Hawaii gave me a refund last year? and should I change it or leave it as is since I lived here for 2 1/2 years now ? don't know what to do

Well.

...first, I would carefully read the following help articles about filing taxes as a member of the military (also the one about the civilian spouse of a military person if you are married.

Then, it's time for you to visit a local professional tax person, near your base, who is likely more expert on what to do on your situation.   Like, if you received a HI refund last year, then you (or spouse, if married) would have  had to have had a civilian job in HI that you paid withholding to during the year.  Whether you need to amend HI tax forms about that when getting your state-of-legal residence straightened out, would be up to someone more expert in your situation.  It is highly unlikely that anyone in this public forum can get all the details needed to figure that out.

i.e., see a local tax professional.   Yeah, it's going to cost you, but I see no other recourse.
