Lost amended tax return check

I filed my return which had an electronic refund. I then filed an amended return and was sent and additional refund by check which I lost. I can find no way to file a lost check with the IRS. I went to their web site and followed the instructions but because my refund amount is the amended amount the IRS computer thinks what I entered was wrong and there is no live person to help.  Help!

Try this:

Call the IRS:  1-800-829-1040  hours 7 AM - 7 PM local time Monday-Friday

When calling the IRS do NOT choose the first option re: "Refund", or it will send you to an automated phone line.

So after first choosing your language, then do NOT choose Option 1 (refund info).  Choose option 2 for "personal income tax" instead.

Then press 1 for "form, tax history, or payment".

Then press 4 "for all other questions."

Then press 2 "for all other questions."  It should then transfer you to an agent.

Or you can contact your local IRS office.  See this IRS website for local IRS offices - http://www.irs.gov/uac/Contact-Your-Local-IRS-Office-1

What number are you using for your refund amount?  You should be using the number as shown on the 1040 not the amount of the actual check.  Example - if your original refund was $500 and then you amended and got an additional refund of $250, then your refund number is $750, not the $250.  If that doesn't work, you may want to try your original refund of $500 in this scenario because the computer system may not be updated.

Do you live near an IRS office? If so, you can go there in person.

Yes and the phone number is automated and ask the same questions as the computer and there is no live person option. I live 4 hours from the nearest office.
