Letter from IRS

I electronically filed my 2020 1040 the end March, 2021 through Turbo Tax.  I received an IRS 12C letter (dated July 26, 2021) stating "we need more information to process the return".  However, no where in the letter were there any details of what information was missing.  On July 29 ,2021 I faxed (to the fax number specified) my response stating that "The specific information requested was not included in the letter. Please resend and include all information you require".

Basically 2 months after my fax  (September 26, 2021) and still no answer.  I have talked with IRS representatives several times and they have verified that in my file there is no mention of what information was needed.   Their reason for no response is that they are so busy (pandemic, Stimulus money, etc.)

Are there any suggestions on next steps - other than waiting who knows how long for all this to resolve?

Called the Taxpayer Advocate Service today and received the typical response: The IRS is incredibly busy and I just need to wait.  How long is undetermined.  Could they just issue my refund and then deal with whatever their concern when they are ready.  Absolutely not.  It's now been 6 months since I filed and my estimate is MAYBE resolution by year's end.

your experience with TAS is typical when the issue is your refund and you can't demonstrate hardship.

The really annoying part of this story is the IRS error - they sent me a 12C letter but failed to give a reason.  So I'm left waiting X additional months just to find out what they want.
