Is there a special place to put an ip pin on my amended 1040 form or should I write it near the top of first page near the name or at the end with signatures?

On IP PIN  is ONLY used on an  original return  not on a 1040X. 

But my 1040X is because I did not enter the ip pin.  So I figured I need it on 1040X

Did you file an original return yet ?   Was is accepted and fully processed yet ?  

Or is the original return being rejected for lack of an IP PIN ?

The original was rejected for lack of an IP PIN.

If you have the IP PIN then why don't you efile the return ... log in and try again ...

Follow these instructions to enter your IP PIN or remove one that you accidentally entered.

Instructions
Open your return if you don't already have it open.
Inside TurboTax, search for IP PIN (don't forget the space) and then select the "Jump to" link in the search results.
On the Identity Protection PIN screen, answer Yes and enter your IP PIN in the space provided.
If you need to remove the IP PIN, answer No instead.
Select Continue.

OK ... so if the ORIGINAL return was never filed you do NOT send in an amended return ... if you do so it will also be rejected.  Instead you print, ink sign & mail in the original form 1040 ... the place for the IP PIN is on the same line as the signature ...

To enter a 6 digit IP PIN

• Click on Federal Taxes (Personal using Home and Business)
• Click on Other Tax Situations
• Scroll down to Other Return Info
• On Identity Protection PIN, click the start button

Or enter ip pin in the Search box located in the upper right of the program screen. Click on Jump to ip pin
