Is it possible to get tax return from old 1098-t forms? 2016 is my first year to file tax return, but I realized that I had few 1098-t forms that I never used or filed.

In order to claim an education credit or deduction on your 2016 tax return, you will enter your Form 1098-T information in the program to allow it to calculate/analyze and tell you which education credit or deduction gives you the maximum benefit. ( If the AOTC wins, the program will display the result at the end of the step-by-step interview process and fill in the Form 8863 for you)

Please follow the steps:

  • After sign-in and select Take me to my return
  • At the right upper corner, in search or Find box, type in "1098t" then enter
  • Choose Jump to 1098t
  • Follow prompts

You will need to purchase the previous years TurboTax products and apply the same instructions in the programs.  Click here: Past year returns

Yes.  It is possible to reclaim some of your refunds with your old 1098-T forms.

Per IRS statue of limitation rules, in order to reclaim a refund, you can go back three years to re-file a 2013, 2014 and 2015 tax return by April 18th 2017.  However, since you were not required to file a tax return in those years, assuming you did not work and had no income, the only educational benefit would possibly apply to you is the American Opportunity Tax Credit AOTC.

The American Opportunity Credit provides up to $2,500 for paying for an undergraduate student's tuition. The credit is partially refundable, meaning that you might be able to get 40 percent of the tax credit even if you have no tax liability. The other 60 percent of the credit can only be used to offset your tax liability.

The Life time Learning Credit and the Tuition & Fees deductions would not apply or help you if you have no income and tax liability.

Thanks for your answer! Can you help me how I can file American Opportunity Credit one? I'm trying to find information about it, but I cannot see any from TurboTax.
