Initially due both Fed/State refund. Two days later filed amended return due to addtl 1099-DIV. Per 1040X I owed taxes and pd. But then refunds deposited. How pay back?

Can the federal and state agencies just remove the money from my account? Do I have to notify someone?

1)  Once you filed the first one...and it was accepted, then that cannot be stopped.  SO you get that original refund.

2)  Then you amended the tax file ......and an amended tax return may take a few months to get processed after you mail it in to the IRS (and state if applicable).  So...when did you mail that paperwork in at the Post Office?    And did you send in a check along with it to pay back what you owed as a payback?  ( Or did you pay the extra online?  They may send those $$ back if they didn't process your amended paperwork yet)

I mailed the 1040X and chk together. But how do I give them back the initial refunds, which I'm no longer due?

You don't give them back the original refund.

The original refund should show on line 18 of your 1040x.....and as long as it is showing there, everything is figured-in, so the $$ you sent in with your check is effectively paying back some of that refund.

You shouldn't send in a 1040x until you actually receive the original refund.
