For my dependent son“Yes” was not checked for “someone can claim me as a dependent” therefore my return was rejected. Amended his return (checked yes), then re-filed my return but was still rejected. Is there a time frame before I can re-file or do I need to mail return?
You will not be able to e-file this year, no matter whether he amended or not. It will be a very long time before his amended return catches up in the system. Sorry---but you have joined the large club of parents whose kids mess things up for them by answering incorrectly on their tax returns that they cannot be claimed. Your return claiming your son must be printed, signed and dated in ink, and mailed.
When you mail a tax return, you need to attach any documents showing tax withheld, such as your W-2’s or any 1099’s. Use a mailing service that will track it, such as UPS or certified mail so you will know the IRS/state received the return.
Federal and state returns must be in separate envelopes and they are mailed to different addresses. Read the mailing instructions that print with your tax return carefully so you mail them to the right addresses.
Thank you! So will I have to wait until IRS approves his amended return before I get my refund?
Do I need to mail, charitable gift statements, mortgage interest statements? Do I need to send in itemized deduction forms, schedule C, etc?
No, you will not have to wait for them to process your son's amended return. But you can expect your mailed return to take a significantly longer time to be processed than an e-filed return--which is one of the sad effects of your situation. When you print the return for filing by mail, it will print out with the forms and schedules that you are supposed to include. You attach any W-2's and any 1099's that show tax withheld. You will not include mortgage 1098's, charity receipts etc. Save those for your own records.
Make sure you use a mailing service like certified mail so you will know the IRS receives it. It may take more than a month for a human to open your envelope and enter anything into the system, so you will have a wait to even see anything posted on the IRS refund site.
Thank you! Do I need to mail state as well or will I be able to e-file through Turbo Tax?
Never mind, your first email said I would have to mail state. Sorry!
Yes--you have to mail the state return too, since a state return cannot be e-filed unless the federal return was e-filed successfully. Sorry. Mail the state return per the mailing instructions that will print out with the state return.
