If my tax refund is late, how will I know if there is a problem with my tax return? It says my return is still being processed. What does that mean?

My estimated refund date was March 9th in the amount of $6982. I chose to pay TurboTax fee out of my refund.

It means that the IRS is still working on your tax return. If you are concerned about the status of your tax return, you can follow these steps to contact the IRS about your return:  Call the IRS at this number: 800-829-0582 (IRS phone support) Press 1 for English, then enter extension 652. Please be aware that there are reported 40 minute average hold times.

Is there a problem with my refund

There are a lot of delays for federal refunds. Once your tax return has been submitted, the most up to date information will come from the IRS. The IRS releases most refunds within 21 calendar days after the e-filed return has been accepted (received), not 21 days from the e-filing date. To check on regular tax refund status via automated phone, call 800-829-1954. (This line has no information on Economic Impact Payments.)The only other way to know when your refund will be released is to use the IRS Where's My Refund tool.

Until the IRS starts processing it on their own, you may not find record of it or the website may say that you have put in incorrect information when tracking your federal refund. As your return moves through the system, the status of it will be updated accordingly. Please see here  for more information on checking the status of an e-filed return.

If accepted by the IRS use the federal tax refund website to check the refund status as it moves through the process here.

See the video in this link for a really good explanation of the process:

So what if I can’t get in contact with them and they never answer the phone? It’s been 37 days since my return was accepted but “Wheres my refund?” Doesn’t give me any information on my refund status. I also haven’t received anything in the mail telling me anything is wrong with my return. I already received my state tax.

The IRS is experiencing a delay in processing returns. Until the IRS starts processing your return the Where's My Refund site may not have any information about your return or it may tell you that you haven't entered your information correctly.  As your return moves through the system the status will be updated accordingly. Keep checking the Where’s My Refund?  site for updates. The IRS updates the site daily, usually in the overnight hours. Also, make sure you are entering the exact amount of your tax return refund (not combined with your state refund), your tax return filing status, and your Social Security number when tracking your refund. If you previously had a status on Where's My Refund? check back later as high volume can cause an issue of the tracking site giving incorrect status results. You can also try calling the WMR Hotline at 800-829-1954 for updated status as well.

So if they don’t contact me with a letter saying if  there are any issues then it’s just a waiting game basically? I just wish I could know that it’s coming even if later than usual.

Yes, you will need to wait to hear about the status on your refund as the IRS is working on backlogs and as well as recently filed tax returns.

Did you ever get your return and if so how long did it actually take?

The IRS has been (and remains) seriously backlogged due to all the new tax laws and extra stimulus filings, as well as unprocessed 2019 returns still left over from the COVID shutdown.  Lots of other folks are still waiting (some since mid-February), so please continue to be patient.  Also see:

I have tried calling [phone number removed], 1, 652: however automated response assumes re: amended return....wrong subject.  Received your confirmation that return was accepted by IRS, however, when I respond to questions re tax return info, it doesn't seem to recognize my personal info re the return!!!  What is the problem???
