If I paid a business money for work on my house up front. He did not provide the work and kept money. He is now out of business. Can I claim any of that?

Paid $14,550 in advance to a Granite Countertops company. He said they could do all the renovations on my house. He took my money and did not do the work. I contacted them many times, got the runaround. He has now gone out of business. Wondering if there is anything I can claim on my taxes for a loss?

Sorry---it sounds like you had a theft loss which is not deductible on your federal return.

You should file a police report or consider legal action against the contractor,
