I would like help preparing my papers for next years taxes like keeping receipts and ect to get the most from my tax return. Which receipts should I be keeping if any? I live in Texas zip 79904 and don't think I get tax returns on groceries or gas. Also I donate often, well above a grand in clothing and more but I give it to goodwill. Their receipt doesn't show what I donated, it just is proof I was there and donated which is the same whether I give them a box of clothes or just a pair of socks.

with the new tax code, deducting sales tax becomes unlikely.

however if you can itemize, you can deduct any sales tax for which you have a receipt.

If you go that route you can't take the standard default amount for your income.

keeping receipts for charitable donations is required if the IRS asks to see it. this is uncommon.
