Checking “ where’s my refund “ now has different screen. Go back and check my return and notice I took recovery credit in error. Corrected it on computer but won’t let me amended it.  Do I need and wait for IRS  to send letter?

And wait to amend until you get the first refund.  If you claimed the Recovery rebate credit in error the IRS has been automatically adjusting refunds so you don't have to amend for that.

To amend your return, wait to see if your return has been accepted or rejected by the IRS or state. If rejected, you can correct and re-send your return. If accepted you should wait until your return has been processed and you receive your refund or confirmation that any tax due has been paid. If you file an amended return while your first return is being processed it can cause extended delays for both returns if two returns are in the system at the same time. In addition, if the IRS makes any change on your original return, you might end up having to amend the amendment. Amended returns can only be mailed - allow 8-12 weeks - can take up to 16 weeks (4 months) for processing.

With the change in unemployment I need to do a second amendment! Is there a way they can just send me back the return. It was accepted awhile ago?

No, there is not a way to send you back your return, however, since your return was already accepted, you can amend your return. The 1040X is not ready just yet, but it should be ready on 3/25/2025. Now when I go to “ WHERE’S MY REFUND” it says the info doesn’t match their records, and it did before. Does this mean they make the adjustments already  and that amount due doesn’t match?

Thanks?

Not necessarily; Just give it more time to process and check WMR periodically for updates. Please keep in mind that due to ongoing effects of the pandemic, the IRS is experiencing delays.

Still nothing, no letter or email. It been more then 6 weeks. How much longer do I need to wait? Now I also have to deal with the unemployment act to go with other problem.

You are correct waiting is all you can do at this time.  The IRS is correcting returns for stimulus errors and the new unemployment exclusion.  You do not amend for either of these.

If you amended you would be waiting even longer as the IRS tries to work first in first out.
