I thought I needed to file my taxes, so I submitted them. My parents already claimed me as a dependent on theirs. How do I get a refund for the money I paid turbotax?

What was on your tax return?  Did you have income?  Even though they claimed you, you would still need to file your own return for your income.

I did have income. I got an email back once I filed mine stating this:

F1040-516 - If Form 1040, 'PrimaryClaimAsDependentInd' is not checked, then the Primary SSN must not be the same as a Dependent SSN on another return filed for the same tax year.

Did you fix it and resend it?  You have to check the box under My Info that says you can be claimed on someone else's return.  Got to My Info  and scroll down to #3 Someone Else can claim me.

If you are a dependent check your 1040. By Standard Deduction it should be checked for "You as a Dependent".

Click on Add a State to let you back into your return.

You do not get a refund from TurboTax for filing your tax return.   You just need to fix it and re-file, and give the correct answer in My Info to the question that asked if you can be claimed as someone else's dependent.

CAN I FILE A RETURN IF I AM A DEPENDENT?

If you can be claimed as a dependent on your parents’ return, you can still file your own return so that you can receive a refund of taxes withheld.  (You will not get back anything for Social Security or Medicare withheld.) Be sure that on your own return you say that you can be claimed as a dependent on someone else’s return.
