I see the IRS extended tax deadline for 2016 tax returns until July 15th. Does this also include amending my 2016 return?

For 2016 tax returns, the normal April 15 deadline to claim a refund has also been extended to July 15, 2020. The law provides a three-year window of opportunity to claim a refund.  If taxpayers do not file a return within three years, the money becomes property of the U.S. Treasury. The law requires taxpayers to properly address, mail and ensure the tax return is postmarked by the July 15, 2020, date.

I have read multiple articles including one on Turbo Tax, Wall Street Journal and Forbes stating that the April 15th deadline got extended for all Tax returns for the last 3yrs. I have read that there are now new deadlines that apply that recently came out.

It does appear that is has been extended.  My original answer was from an IRS FAQ sheet dated 04/10/20.   Another update on 04/17/20 reverses that decision.  According to the most recent information, the 2016 filing date has also been extended to 07/15/20.  I will edit the above to reflect the more current information.

So my question is with the new extension does this also mean I can still amend my 2016 return?

Yes, you have until 07/15 to claim a refund for a 2016 tax return.  Here are the amending instructions for 2016.
