I received IRS notice CP22A showing I owe based on my amended TurboTax return, but my return shows a refund. How can I resolve this?

I called the 800 number on the form and have sat on hold with the IRS for a total of 5.5 hours this week, getting transferred from one unhelpful person to another.

Very frustrating but only the iRS can resolve that.

Review that 1040X carefully ... did you ever get the original refund or pay the original balance due ?  Are lines 16 or 18 correct ?

Look at the form 1040X …

Column A should have the figures from the original return, Column C the corrected figures and Column B the differences between the other 2 which needs an explanation on page 2 of the form 1040X.

If you completed it correctly you will see an entry on either line 16 OR 18:

On line 16 should be the amount you paid with your original return. If you paid nothing already then this line should be zero.

On line 18 should be the amount of your original refund you received.  If you have not received your refund yet then you need to wait for it.  If the refund changes from what you expected then this line must reflect that change.

Then you will see your extra refund on line 22 OR  the new balance due you need to pay on line 20.

Everything looks correct... line 16 shows the amount I paid with the original return and line 22 has the amount to be refunded. In my Record of Account from the IRS website, it shows the Ordinary Dividend Income (Sch B) and Net Investment Income Tax amounts from my original return. This throws off the total income and tax calculations and results in the AGI and tax owed from my original return. I still don't understand why they're saying I owe MORE now.

I finally got hold of an IRS rep and they said I needed to send a letter to the address on the notice. I did that this week and included copies of all relevant pages from my amended return. I'm waiting to see what I hear back now.
